Humanity Unites Brilliance

Inspiring Stories from the HUB website.

April 24, 2008 - HUMANITARIAN CALL - Kimmie Weeks

Today’s call began with Sharan leading us in a prayer/meditation of gratitude that we are blessed to come together in silence, love and heart space to appreciate the time we have in co-creative space. She invited us to release the energy of every moment that came before we got on the call and to ready ourselves to share in the energy that brings forth blessings and illumination for each person participating today. She shared that she had just finished sharing time and energy with Jean Houston, who provides us today with reminders that we each are called to bring forth our emerging selves with all the beauty, brilliance and bold potential we have within us. We must step into the beat we may have never stepped into before. We must allow it to take charge and command of what we have to step into. Sharan also reminded us to be like soldiers: relentless, bold and tirelessly committed to the inner and outer journeys that are presented before us.

Before Kimmie Weeks was introduced to us, Charlie spoke of his gratitude that we are trampolining together, which ultimately takes us all to higher heights. Charlie quoted Dante:

In the middle of the road of my life
I awoke in the dark wood
where the true way was wholly lost
Charlie said that this had happened in his own life and it happened in the life of today’s guest, Kimmie Weeks, who found himself as a child in Liberia during the Civil War and committed his life at the age of 9 to saving children from similar atrocities to those he had endured.

After his introduction and words of gratitude for Kimmie’s Guiding Angel who introduced him to HUB, Kimmie told us his story. He had grown up in Liberia and lived there during the Civil War. He described it as a shocking experience wherein everything that was normal “fell away” almost overnight. He and those of his community suddenly had no water, no electricity, no hospitals, no schools. None of the things that created “normal” in their lives. He told us of how he and thousands of others went with his family to a refugee camp, where they watched thousands die of starvation. After one month in the camp, Kimmie became very ill with Cholera, Yellow Fever and Malaria. He and his mother lived with 15 other families in a small classroom. They waited for someone to intervene and provide assistance, but no assistance came.

As thousands died because of starvation and disease, hope faded away. There were so many dead that instead of burying the dead, bodies were piled up. All the while, as Kimmie became more ill, the others who lived with him and his mother in the small classroom began to suspect that Kimmie was dead and that his mother was hiding his death from the rest of the group. One of the men who was in the group felt for a pulse and, finding none, proclaimed Kimmie dead. So he, too, was thrown on a heap of the dead although he was still alive, but unconscious.

After this, Kimmie’s mother walked for hours, digging through the dead bodies. Everyone who witnessed her actions thought she had gone insane. But she persisted and found him. Kimmie explained that he did not remember being thrown onto the death heap, but that his next recollection was of his mother violently shaking his body until he opened his eyes to see his mother’s grief-stricken face.

Over 200,000 people died of preventable hunger and disease during the Civil War. A family with 6 children that Kimmie knew saw the loss of all 6 children within a 6 month period of time.

Kimmie told us how this experience changed him and, at 10 years old, he promised that if he survived, he would dedicate his life to making sure no child went without food or water and to make sure that no child had to live in a poverty situation.

From there, Kimmie went on to participate in the Children’s Disarmament Campaign, where 20,000 child soldiers, some as young as 6 years old, were rescued from the combat situation as Kimmie and his associates went and spoke to the leaders and warlords in the bush, convincing them to stop using children in combat. It proved the power of children and young people when they make the decision to activate themselves to bring peace.

Two years later, Kimmie began being pursued by the Liberian government as a “threat to the constitution” and “a dangerous subversion.” His high school was shut down and 20 of his fellow students were detained for questioning. Soldiers came to his home looking for him, forcing Kimmie to seek help from his friends who hid him for 3 weeks before a friendly government assisted him in escaping to the United States.

But Kimmie remains committed to changing the way things are in Africa. He is committed to making sure that the aid that is sent in relief dollars to Africa actually reaches the people. Last year, for example, Kimmie was able to see $190,000 go to the direct assistance of 150,000 people because of strategically-placed resources. This year, with the assistance of Africans who are involving themselves in this cause, $1,000,000 will go to direct assistance.

Kimmie’s final words before he closed was that HUB and the new model of thinking and commitment and partnership is exactly what we need to make real change. Charlie then invited Kimmie to talk about the project that HUB is partnering with him to create. The first program is going to help young people who fought and became physically disabled and those who were born with physical disabilities. Two hundred and fifty of them will be given vocational training and be provided an opportunity to participate in a co-op and receive computer skills so that they can escape the social stigma that their disabilities bring. They will be assisted in re-integrating into society and providing a meaningful contribution. It is a meaningful part of the re-building process.

Brenden Burchard was also on the call and was invited to share his thoughts. He spoke of the moment that life offered him a “Golden Ticket” and shared that just as Kimmie’s story illustrates, we always have a second chance to find out who we are and to make a profound difference in the world.
