"Discipline,"I have come to realize, is an internal event. All we can truly do as parents and teachers is model what we believe to be appropriate behavior and encourage our children to be the best they can be. Once discovered, children find their inner motivation.

Helping children believe in themselves and be motivated by their own inner strivings was an objective of the "Lessons in Living" program. I feel it is an objective that’s well worth pursuing in the classroom as well as at home.

In her book, Joy in the Classroom, Stephanie Herzog explains a technique called centering that she has used in her classrooms to help children get in touch with their innermost feelings. It employs the imagination to bring children into a quiet space where they learn to commune with themselves on a deep level. It is an ancient technique once described as, "Entering into the closet and closing the door." Stephanie noticed that when she used the technique regularly, the children became self-directed, orderly and had a deeper respect for each other. They involved themselves in classroom activities with enthusiasm, and friendships often developed when least expected.

If we want children to trust and respect us, we must learn to trust and respect them. How we do this is not always easy to know. We have been told to teach only Love, for that is what we are. I would offer that with children, we need merely remind them who they are by treating them lovingly and with regard. Fostering an atmosphere of trust is more than worth the effort; when the mind and the heart of a child is at stake, it’s worth the risk.

CJ ryce has spent many years searching out the best, most effective tools for communication and parenting available today.
